The Road to Jiu-Jitsu Greatness

João’s introduction to jiu-jitsu came at the age of 15 when a friend invited him to try a class. Despite having no prior knowledge of martial arts, João found a love for the sport that would change his life forever. Starting under the guidance of a purple belt coach named Vitor, João eventually trained with Jonathas “Monteirinho” Couto, who awarded him his blue, purple, and brown belts.

In 2013, João earned his black belt through a combined effort by Monteirinho and Eduardo “Jamelão” Conceição, two legends in the sport. This milestone marked the culmination of years of dedication and the beginning of a new chapter in his career.

The Nickname "Somalia"

João’s nickname, “Somalia,” originated during his early training days. At just 15 years old and weighing less than 110 pounds, João’s teammates joked that he resembled the malnourished children often depicted in charity advertisements for Somalia. The name stuck, and over time it became a badge of honor, symbolizing João’s resilience and determination.

From Competitor to Coach

After moving to the United States, João fulfilled his dream of opening his own academy. He founded Rockstar Martial Arts North McKinney with his wife in 2019 and later expanded to Rockstar Martial Arts North Prosper in 2024. Today, João is not only a decorated competitor but also a mentor to aspiring jiu-jitsu athletes, representing both Rockstar Martial Arts and Soulfighters Texas.
